DS Consultants Ltd. (DS) is a consulting engineering firm that specializes in geotechnical, environmental, hydrogeology, materials inspection, and testing. Our head office is located in Vaughan with branch offices located in Barrie and Cambridge. Our team currently consists of 150 highly qualified and experienced engineers, hydrogeologists, environmental scientists, technologists, and support staff.

DS is currently seeking a Field Technician(s) to join our team in the Cambridge office. This is an exciting opportunity for candidates looking to further develop their careers in civil engineering. Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical services in a field and laboratory environment
  • Duties can include but not limited to site inspections, material testing (soil, asphalt, concrete) using a nuclear gauge, material sampling, data collection and general geotechnical work supervision
  • Providing technical assistance in materials related projects and tasks, including carrying out field and laboratory testing of various materials on construction sites, in-situ density testing and testing of concrete and asphalt materials
  • Ability to lift up and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Summarizing and analyzing findings from investigations and lab testing for report writing
  • Ensuring workplace health and safety practices are followed at all times
  • Work with and provide support to other members of the field technician group in assisting with other field and office activities as required

Qualifications:

  • Maintain records, and complete regular calibration testing in compliance with requirements for certification with Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories (CCIL)
  • Conduct maintenance on laboratory equipment
  • Perform aggregate qualification testing programs in accordance with procedures outlined in CSA and ASTM
  • Conduct routine in-field asphalt and soil compaction testing
  • Prepare laboratory test reports, and field review reports
  • Perform concrete testing in the field and the laboratory
  • Supervise and/or carry out site geotechnical inspections of construction work and materials testing.
  • Conduct in situ testing of various materials on construction sites, compaction testing and testing of concrete and asphalt.
  • Adhering to all DS workplace health and safety practices
  • Inspect the quality of construction and construction materials (soils, aggregates, concrete, shotcrete, asphalt, sealant and membrane)
  • Monitor placement of various construction materials and workmanship
  • Review contract drawings and specifications
  • Report any non-conformance concerns to the management.
  • Execute quality control tests in the field on construction materials.
  • Prepare and collect samples for laboratory testing.
  • Perform compaction testing by Nuclear Densometer.
  • Test plastic concrete on site and cast samples for compressive testing.
  • Test shotcrete for tunneling on site and cast specimens for flexural testing
  • Asphalt & concrete coring for thickness and material composition investigations.
  • Ensure accuracy of test data.
  • Perform visual inspections of roadways, utilities.
  • Bridge deck waterproofing inspections.
  • Soils inspections & proof rolling.
  • Write quality control inspection and test reports
  • Liaison with clients and contractors and participate at site meetings.
  • Educate and train new staff.
  • Maintain testing equipment in good condition.
  • Maintain calibration of equipment.
